What is Intuitive Eating?

“If you aren’t hungry when you start eating, how do you know when to stop?” ~ Michelle May, MD Am I Hungry?® Mindful Moment

This profound question gets to the heart of what it means to eat intuitively using mindfulness. Intuitive eating is the practice of using innate hunger and fullness (satiety) cues to guide eating rather than eating or restricting food because of situational or emotional reasons.

For many people, years of dieting and/or overeating have distorted their body’s ability to detect hunger or fullness, which were intact at birth. A mindfulness practice can help restore one’s natural ability to detect hunger and fullness by bringing non-judgmental awareness to bodily senses, thoughts and feelings.

Over time, the simple concept behind intuitive eating–eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full–becomes easier and more natural. As an intuitive eater you learn to trust internal cues that guide eating what your body needs when it is hungry and stopping when you are comfortably full.
